The Eldon Garden Club 2010 President’s Report
by
Joan Eads, 2009 – 2011 President

The seventeen members of the Eldon Garden Club chose “Now and Forever - Beloved Earth” as their club theme for 2010.

"Now and Forever - Beloved Earth"
by
Joan Eads

From here to there and place to place
Throughout this world we share God’s grace.
We plant and sow and cultivate
Then groom and preen and decorate.

With respect and passion for this earth
We study, determined, to shield its worth.
By and by we discover more
Of how to keep this land secure.

We prepare, develop and in time acquire
An undying wish - a lasting desire
To protect this Earth and all there in.
This love affair shall never end.
Each monthly program and varied projects addressed a particular aspect of this theme including but not limited to:

Program on ”Use and Reuse” presented by a representative of Waste Watchers of Lake Ozark

We planted a Paw Paw Tree in observance of Arbor Day and to further enhance our
Blue Star Memorial Garden and promote the presence of butterflies.

Several of our members attended the Central District Spring Meeting in Tipton. One member won 3rd place in the Garden Walk Painting category at the FGCM Convention and the club received a purple ribbon rating along with a blue ribbon for our yearbook.

Club members and members of the community donated plants and other items for a plant and rummage sale which proved quite profitable

The Eldon Garden Club collected donations over Memorial Day Weekend at the
Eldon City Cemetery - these are to be used for beautification and maintenance of the cemetery

In June during National Garden Club Week, our club held a Small Standard Flower Show entitled “The Good Old Summertime” which was our big project for this year. We had 16 design entries, 59 horticulture entries and one educational exhibit. This was the first flower show that the Eldon Garden Club had held in several years. A lot of entries were from new members that had never participated in a flower show before. The show received a score entitling them to apply for an FGCM award.  We also observed and promoted National Garden Club Week with a resolution signed by City of Eldon Mayor.

In August several members toured Maggie=s Farm at Fortuna with lecture provided by owner Dorothy Collett who raises cut flowers and gourds.

In November we will “Share God’s Grace” with a fall plant exchange.

Many other projects were addressed during the year which included Yards of the Month from May thru October and a Garden Therapy project in which we provided the plants and assistance for residents of the Lee House Assisted Living Facility as they filled planter boxes for their continued enjoyment. Other Garden Therapy projects are planned for this fall. Slowly but surely the Eldon Garden Club is also reworking two flower gardens located in Eldon city parks.

We had a busy spring followed by a long, hot summer. Now that fall temperatures seem to have arrived, we look forward to fall outdoor projects and tours.

I will be stepping down as club President at the end of this year but having held that office for the last four years, I have come to know that the new slate of officers for the 2011/2012 term will work diligently to perpetuate the ideals of the Eldon Garden Club, Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
