2010 CAPITAL GARDEN CLUB PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Jefferson City, Missouri
by
Marsha Richeson, 2010 Capital Garden Club President
The eighteen (18) members of Capital Garden Club have enjoyed 2010 with programs center this year around improving our own gardens. Programs included fruit trees as landscape specimens; and including many blooming plants in mulched beds.
Capital Garden Club hosted a dinner for the Master Gardeners of Jefferson City, Bittersweet Garden Club and the Jefferson City Men’s Garden Club. “Juice of the Vine” was the program and approximately 50 people attended this event.
Members attended both Spring District meeting and two members attended the State Convention.
The “Plant It Pink” National Garden Club project was incorporated into several of the meetings and in the Club’s Municipal Project. In March, there was a “Paint It Pink” workshop where members painted small birdhouses to be used in containers. In May, members planted containers with pink flowers and used their birdhouses in the containers. June brought the “National Garden Week” and this year the Municipal Project was planted with pink petunias, pink vinca and red grass. Mayor John Landwehr presented a Proclamation from the City of Jefferson declaring “National Garden Week.” In the Municipal Flower Bed of pink flowers, a large pink birdhouse was hung with the breast cancer symbol painted on one side, and dogwood flowers and Capital Garden Club painted on the other side. Several trips were made this year to gardens in the area and members were encouraged to look for pink flowers that could be planted in their own landscapes.
Fall will bring continued participation in the “Golden Days” National Garden Club program with a special program being given in October.
Capital Garden Club members are being encouraged to apply for Butterfly, Hummingbird, and Bird Sanctuary certificates. Most members gardens meet the requirements.
Capital Garden Club is like its flower, the dogwood – small in size, but a club for all seasons.
