The Ashland Garden Club Presidents Report for 2010
by
Jeanne Mc Donald, 2010 President
Programs for the year have included focus on the topics of roses, basic design for flower shows, the Southern Boone Learning Garden, tours of 5 members gardens, butterflies, ash borer and bats.
Special activities have included:
- Planting a tree in the Ashland Park to honor a former member as an Arbor Day Observance
- A group attended the Bradford Farms Native Plant Sale
- Had a faux flower show to give new members experience to help their future participation in shows
- We are in the process of giving a citation to one of our local banks.
- A new park in Ashland received the assistance of club members in planning the design and planting of an entrance bed.
- Funds were given to replace 3 trees destroyed by the ice storm and to purchase a new bench in the Ashland Park.
- A donation was given to the Southern Boone Learning Garden in the after school program.
Ongoing programs have continued:
· Junior Garden Club has focused on making suet feeders for birds, put Bluebird Houses together (they really like to use the hammers and screwdriver), propagating seeds, planting of annuals in the school flower beds, basics of flower design, planting bulbs in the school flower beds, making of potpourri and making sachets.
· Yard of the Month has been chosen and a picture placed in the local paper each month since May.
· A scholarship of $ 700 was awarded to a graduating senior at Southern Boone High School.
· Tomorrow is the Ashland Fall Fest and we will have a booth to support our projects. One item for sale is mums which we get from a Columbia Garden Center. This gives us an opportunity to reach out to the community.
· We continue to maintain several flower beds in the park and downtown area. People tell us how they enjoy the gardens but none stop to help us. If others have success in getting community help let me know your secret.
· Our interaction with the Daniel Boone Library South County Branch continues with purchase of gardening magazines and this spring a book from the Conservation Department on Missouri Wildflowers.
Our plant sale in late April is our main money making activity. Club members donate plants from their yards and gardens. We also work with wholesale garden companies and the Southern Boone High School to have annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees and hanging baskets for sale.
- The rest of the year will include planning for next year and a family Christmas dinner and gift exchange.

The Landscape Design Refresher held June 18, 2010 in Columbia Missouri was a great success despite 90 degree weather. 26 participants from throughout Missouri enjoyed touring Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, the Copperstone Subdivision, Stephens Lake Park and Flat Branch Park. Numerous ways of managing water were discussed from rain gardens to water features. Gayle Fry attended the class.
